As we publish the 2026 Top 80, we reflect on progress in sickle cell disorder as a long continuum of effort, spanning generations. The care we see today reflects decades of clinical insight, scientific persistence, patient advocacy and lived experience gradually coming into focus. 

Many of the improvements shaping care now were set in motion long before they became visible, driven by individuals who worked steadily, quietly behind the scenes and often without recognition, to advance scientific understanding and strengthen the foundations of Sickle Cell care.
